The 'Duel in the Sun' between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus was a classic head-to-head encounter and remains one of the greatest Opens of all time.
The future of Turnberry
By developing The Open Championship as one of the world's greatest sporting events and encouraging commercial success, the R&A is able to invest in the development of the sport around the world. Funds are made available through the R&A Foundation into grass roots development projects around the world. Particular emphasis is placed on the encouragement of junior golf, and the development of the game in emerging golfing nations, on coaching, and in the provision of courses and practice facilities.
